August 16, 2013

Mr. Daniel Spungen,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my great honor to join you at this special event, Shanghai Memory, in remembering Jewish refugees in Shanghai 70 years ago.

First, I wish to extend my warmest greetings and best wishes to the local Jewish community, former Jewish refugees in Shanghai and all the distinguished guests present today.

The Chinese and Jewish people endured immeasurable pain and suffering before and during the Second World War. The Chinese people fully understand the Jewish people's feeling about those dark years.

I am particularly honored that Ms. Manli Ho will address us today.

I have great respect for her father Dr. Fengshan Ho, who helped tens of thousands of Jewish refugees escape from Nazi persecution by granting them Chinese visas. His humanitarian efforts have demonstrated the traditional Chinese values of righteousness and helping those in need. By doing that, he has also contributed a most touching part to the friendship between the Chinese and Jewish people. He is a true hero. I am proud of him. His spirit will certainly live on forever.

I look forward very much to the speech of Ms. Manli Ho.

      Thank you.
