Consul General Zhao Weiping's Remarks on the Evening Reception for the Exhibition Preview of China's First Emperor and His Terracotta Warriors

(February 29, 2016)

Good evening.

I am so delighted to join you this evening in welcoming the terracotta warriors to this prestigious museum. They are indeed very special guests from China, because they are already 2200 years old. I am sure that they are much older than all of us here. At such a senior age, they really don’t travel overseas very often, so it’s indeed a very rare opportunity for us to welcome them here.

It is the first time since 1980 for the Field Museum and the city of Chicago to host the terracotta warriors exhibition again. It is also another great endeavor by the Field Museum to promote cultural exchanges with China since its grand opening of the wonderful Cyrus Tang Hall of China in June last year.

Terracotta warriors not only represent the splendid Chinese ancient civilization, but also reflect the great wisdom and artistic talents of the mankind 2000 years ago. In my opinion, visiting the terracotta warriors today is just like having a dialogue with the ancient people. Such dialogue will enrich our understanding of the past history and help us embrace the future with a vision we need.

I wish to express my deep appreciation to President Richard Lariviere and Field Museum for hosting this wonderful exhibition and I congratulate the city of Chicago for being home again to the terracotta warriors after more than 30 years. I also want to thank Deputy Directer General Zhou Kuiying and all the friends present here this evening for their efforts in making this exhibition possible. Thank you.
