Consul General Hong Lei Attended "Dreams of the Kings: A Jade Suit for Eternity" Exhibition at Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City

On December 15, the opening ceremony of exhibition “Dreams of the Kings: A Jade Suit for Eternity: Treasures of the Han Dynasty from the Xuzhou Municipal Museum” was held in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. Museum Director Julian Zugazagoitia, Honorary Director Marc Wilson, Senior Curator of Chinese Art Colin Mackenzie , Director of Gallery Exhibitions of China Institute Willow Weilan Hai, as well as representatives from the culture and art circles attended the ceremony and the exhibition.

Consul General Hong Lei expressed his congratulations to the successful exhibition. Hong Lei said that Han Dynasty was the pinnacle of Chinese history, boasting highly developed economy and advanced culture and art, and playing an important part in Chinese civilization. The splendid Han culture and art were centered around Huaxia culture and at the same time, mixed with features of hundreds of minority ethnic groups. Han dynasty played an important role in the formation of a unified Chinese culture featuring multi-ethnic group elements. The “Dreams of the Kings: A Jade Suit for Eternity” will exhibit jade, terra cotta figures, stamp seals, bronze wares along with others which fully demonstrate the life of Han Dynasty from different perspectives. Han Dynasty was the golden age for ancient jade artifact which showcases excellent and outstanding craftsmanship and exquisite nature. The American visitors can take a close look at the antiques, appreciate the Han Dynasty art and learn about China’s long history.

Consul General Hong Lei said that China and the US are both culturally influential countries in the world and people-to-people and cultural exchanges are the foundation of bilateral relations. We are willing to work with the US to strengthen cultural exchanges, facilitate the understanding and friendship between the two peoples, and contribute to the stable and healthy development of bilateral relationship.

In his speech, Director Julian Zugazagoitia said that the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is very honored to host the “Dreams of the Kings: A Jade Suit for Eternity” exhibition which presents so many marvelous artifacts . China’s history is long and splendid. The Museum is willing to enhance cooperation with China and facilitate cultural exchanges between the two countries.

“Dreams of the Kings: A Jade Suit for Eternity” was organized and planed by the Xuzhou Municipal Museum and Gallery Exhibitions of China Institute. In the exhibition, 76 groups and 106 pieces of antiques are on display, among which 14 are national grade-one cultural relics, 37 grade-two and 26 grade-three. The exhibition will last until April, 2018.
