Consul General Hong Lei Attended NBA Team Denver Nuggets' 2018 "Happy Chinese New Year" Celebration

On the night of February 27, 2018, NBA team Denver Nuggets held its first-ever “Happy Chinese New Year” celebration during a game at its home court. Consul General Hong Lei, Deputy Consul General Yu Peng, Consul Zhang Min of Cultural Affairs, Denver Nuggets Chief Marketing Officer Declan Bolger, and nearly 20,000 audience watched the game and enjoyed wonderful performances by Chinese community in Denver.

Denver Nuggets played an intense and exciting game against the LA Clippers at its home court Pepsi Center.

During the halftime break, local artists from Denver Chinese School, Jasmine dance academy, the Great Wall performing arts troupe, the Denver Shaolin martial arts school, etc. presented to the audiences wonderful performances including dance, Chinese qipao show and martial arts.

The engaging performances with distinct Chinese characteristics received rounds of applause from the audience. The host declared that night to be a special celebration of the Chinese New Year and warmly welcomed Consul General Hong Lei. He said that all people in the world belong to one big family. Today, everyone came together to celebrate the Chinese Spring Festival. China and the United States are each other’s close friend. China has a long history and brilliant cultures. The two countries should enhance their mutual understanding and communication. Consul General Hong Lei and Denver Nuggets Chief Marketing Officer Bolger walked to the center of the court together,greeted the audience and exchanged souvenirs.

During the game, Consul General Hong Lei had a cordial conversation with Chief Marketing Officer Bolger. Consul General Hong Lei said that we appreciate Denver Nuggets’ "Happy Spring Festival" celebration, which shows the team’s goodwill towards China. This year, we have co-hosted three "Happy Spring Festival" celebrations with Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons respectively. These events were warmly received by the audiences. The NBA has nearly 300 million Chinese fans. Live broadcasts of NBA games enjoy particularly high ratings in China. Celebrations of the Chinese New Year with NBA games will not only allow American friends to learn more about Chinese culture, but also enhance the friendship between two peoples. Chief Marketing Officer Bolger said that Chinese New Year celebration event was a great idea. Through the influential platform of NBA games, American people can learn more about the rich Chinese culture. He hoped to strengthen cultural and sports cooperation with China in the near future.
