Consul General Hong Lei Attended Memorial Service for Mr. Cyrus Chung-Ying Tang

On July 14, 2018, Consul General Hong Lei attended the memorial service for Mr. Tang Chung-Ying held in the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

Consul General Hong Lei expressed his sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Tang Chung-Ying. Consul General Hong Lei said that Mr. Tang Chung-Ying, as the founder of the Tang Industries, has worked tirelessly to establish himself as a model of Chinese entrepreneurship in the United States. Mr. Tang has long been committed to the charity cause in China and the United States. He has actively contributed to the society in such areas as education, medicine and cultural exchanges. On June 23, 2015, the Cyrus Tang Hall of China was unveiled at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, becoming the only permanent exhibition in the United States showcasing Chinese history and culture from an anthropological perspective, and playing a positive role in promoting American understanding of China.

Consul General Hong Lei delivered a condolence message from Minister Xu Yousheng of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of China’s State Council to Mr. Tang Chung-Ying’s family. In the message, Minister Xu Yousheng expressed his gratitude for Mr. Tang’s enduring interest and support for the economic development of his homeland and for his dedication to the charity cause in China. His efforts has contributed to the educational and medical development and poverty alleviation in China.

Mr. Tang Chung-Ying was born in Shengze Township in Wujiang District, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province in 1930. He came to the United States at the age of 20 and worked hard to establish the Tang Industries and served as its chairman. In 1995, he established the Tang Foundations in the United States, including the Cyrus Tang Foundation, Tang Foundation for the Research of Traditional Chinese Medicines and the Cyrus Chung-Ying Tang Foundation, supporting education and social welfare causes in China and the United States. The Tang Foundations donated a total of US$20 million in China, 90% of which was spent on education and 10% on other charity causes. On June 23, 2018, Mr. Tang Chung-Ying passed away in the United States at the age of 88.
