On July 29th, 2018, Consul General Hong Lei attended the 19th New Staff Inauguration Ceremony of both the Chinese American Overseas Exchange Association and the Wuyi Association of Chicago (hereafter referred to as the Two Associations).

In his address, Consul General Hong Lei said that the Two Associations are very important traditional overseas Chinese associations in Chicago. Throughout the years, they have both demonstrated deep affection for the homeland, and have made grand contributions in the way of promoting the betterment of China-US relations, providing service to Chicago’s overseas Chinese community, publicizing and promoting Chinese culture, and advocating for the peaceful reunification of China.

Consul General Hong Lei said that the last leadership of the Two Associations made manifold accomplishments. They held a China National Day banquet to express their affection for the homeland and its citizens. Additionally, during the Spring Festival, the Two Associations helped host a performance by the state-level art troupe “Cultures of China, Festival of Spring” that performs for overseas Chinese. Many overseas Chinese were invited to enjoy the brilliant performance by Chinese artists. And recently, the Two Associations held a lively Ping-Pong tournament, giving Chinese community a chance to establish connections through friendly competition, not to mention an opportunity for players to learn from each other. This engaging event has become a brand project for the Two Associations.

Consul General Hong Lei said that the smooth transition of leadership made sure that the new leadership can wholly inherit the original mission of the Two Associations. He expressed his willingness to assist the Two Associations in their tasks of advancing cooperation and mutual understanding between China and US, advocating for One China as agreed upon in the 1992 Consensus and opposing Taiwan independence, promoting Chinese culture, and ultimately tending to the needs of the overseas Chinese community in Chicago.

The Two Associations’ new presidents Fang Yanhui and Li Guoxiong promised to work hand-in-hand with the associations’ leaders and members to promote amiable relations between the peoples China and the US, support the grand undertaking of peaceful reunification, and provide service for the overseas Chinese community.
