Introduction to 2019 "Happy Chinese New Year" Event Series Throughout Midwest :Chinese New Year Celebrations with the NBA

The 2019 "Happy Chinese New Year" event series will make its next few appearances on the boisterous basketball courts of the NBA. Thus far, four NBA teams have decided to hold "Happy Chinese New Year" events during their respective home games. The Chinese Consulate General in Chicago strongly supports these events.

On the evening of January 31st, the Detroit Pistons will host the first 2019 “Happy Chinese New Year” event at their home court, the Little Caesars Arena. This is the third year in a row since 2017 the Pistons will invite local Chinese art troupes to put on Chinese New Year cultural performances during a home game. This year’s event was jointly organized by the North American Chinese Coalition, Chinese Association of Greater Detroit, Michigan Chinese Arts Troupe, Dragon Eagle TV, and the Detroit Pistons. On this night, the Pistons will face the Dallas Mavericks. Before the game begins, the Michigan Chinese Arts Troupe will perform a percussion-based dance, dragon and lion dance, waist-drum dance, and a display of Tai Chi. During intermission, artists from the Sichuan Opera Company will stun the audience with a long-silk dance and mask changing performances. On the evening of February 6th, the Chicago Bulls will host the next 2019 "Happy Chinese New Year" event at their home court, the United Center. This is the second time the Chicago Bulls will invite Chinese art troupes to put on Chinese New Year cultural performances during a home game. This year’s event was jointly organized by the Chicago Huaxing Arts Group and the Chicago Bulls. On this night, the Chicago Bulls will face the New Orleans Pelicans. Before the game, the Huaxing Arts Group will perform a dragon and lion dance. Tao Tong, a famous Chinese male tenor, will then sing the American national anthem. During intermission, the Huaxing Arts Group will put on a display of martial arts and other dazzling performances rich with the spirit of Chinese culture. This year’s Chicago Bulls “Happy Chinese New Year” celebrations are part of the city of Chicago’s 2019 "Happy Chinese New Year" event series. On the evening of February 11th, the Minnesota Timberwolves will host the next 2019 "Happy Chinese New Year" event at their home court, the Target Center. This is the second year the Timberwolves will invite Chinese art troupes to hold Chinese New Year cultural performances during a home game. On this night, the Minnesota Timberwolves will face the LA Clippers. At the outset of the game, Professor Gao Hong, a famous pipa performer from Minnesota, will play the American national anthem. During intermission, the Minnesota Huaxing Arts Group and the Chinese Dance School’s Dragon Dance Team will shake the court with a special lion and dragon dance performance "The Brilliance of Huaxing: Lion and Dragon Dance". Also on the evening of February 11th, the Indiana Pacers will host its 2019 “Happy Chinese New Year” celebration at their home court, the Bankers Life Fieldhouse. This year’s event was jointly organized by the Carmel-Xiangyang Sister City Committee, Indianapolis Chinese Community Center, China Journal Indiana Inc, Indiana Association of Chinese-Americans, and the Indiana Pacers. On this night, the Indiana Pacers will face the Charlotte Hornets. Before the game, lion dancers from the Indiana Association of Chinese-Americans will interact with the audience to kick off the evening’s celebration. At the outset of the game, Ms. Liu Xiaodi will sing the American national anthem. During intermission, members of local Chinese organizations and other volunteers will present uniquely Chinese cultural performances.
