Premier Wen urges more efforts to contain bird flu

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday called for more efforts to contain the spread of the deadly bird flu virus. He says the situation of avian influenza in the country remains grave.

Speaking at a State Council meeting on the prevention and treatment of bird flu Wednesday, the premier said the epidemic is yet to be brought under control in many localities and new cases are occuring.

The premier noted the key work now is to prevent the virus from leaping to humans. He also urges local governments to deliver compensation or subsidies to affected poultry farmers in a timely manner.

Journalists on Visit to Bird Flu-Hit Areas in Guangxi

Fourteen foreign and domestic journalists have flown to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to visit Dingdang Town in Long'an county, the first area in China affected by the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus.

This is the first time the State Council Information Office has organized journalists to visit areas affected by bird flu since the mainland confirmed outbreaks of the disease.

The journalists are from 10 national and international media, including Xinhua, Associated Press, Reuters and Kyodo News Agency.
