On January 11, 2014, Mr. Zhao Weiping, Chinese Consul General to Chicago strongly condemned Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's  visit to the Yasukuni Shrine during an event hosted by local Chinese associations. Journalists from Chinese medias in Greater Chicago were present.

 Consul General Zhao Weiping said, on December 26, 2013, in total disregard of international opposition, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe blatantly paid homage to the Yasukuni Shrine where Class-A war criminals of World War II are honored. Yasukuni Shrine was a spiritual tool and symbol of Japanese militarism in its war of aggression and to date, 14 Class-A war criminals who committed heinous crimes to the victimized Asian peoples remain honored there. Inside the Shrine, members of the Kamikaze who launched suicide strikes against American warships as well as telegraphs about Pearl Harbor surprise attack are still honored. The perverse act by Abe is a brazen affront upon the feelings of people of all victimized countries, a flagrant provocation to the international justice and order, and even a gross trampling upon human conscience, which as it should, aroused strong protest and severe condemnation from the Chinese government and the international community. 

  Consul General Zhao pointed out that facts have proved that since becoming Prime Minister, with the support of domestic right-wing forces, Abe has been attempting to push Japan back to the old militaristic course. During the past year, instead of sincerely repenting the war crimes, Abe trumpeted the fallacy of "the history of aggression is not conclusive", denied Japan's war atrocities such as comfort women and Nanjing massacre and spared no efforts in pushing revision of pacifist constitution and expansion of military build-up. Recently, Abe proclaimed in his new year's reflection that the struggle to restore a "strong Japan" has just begun and it was time to take a great step forward to build a "new Japan." The true intention of Abe is to whitewash the history of aggression and colonialism by militaristic Japan, overturn the just trial of Japanese militarism by the international community and challenge the outcome of WWII and the post-war international order. All the acts of Abe have demonstrated that the evil spirits of militarism still remain deeply rooted in the minds of some Japanese. They have no human conscience and show no repentance for inflicting untold sufferings to the people of victimized countries by Japanese aggression. They are pugnacious in nature and still obsessed with the old dream of "great imperial Japan", attempting to revert Japan to the dangerous course of militarism revival. The painful lessons of World War II tell us that Japanese militarism is a catastrophe not only for the Asian countries, but also for many other countries including the United States. The international community must keep high vigilance and resolutely prevent this scenario. China and the US were allies in WWII, our troops fought shoulder to shoulder against Japanese aggressors and made enormous sacrifices. The people of our two countries should join hands again to firmly oppose the perverse acts of the Japanese right-wing forces.

    Consul General Zhao said, the Chinese compatriots in Greater Chicago have taken the lead in condemning and protesting against Abe's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine. More than 30 local Chinese associations including Chinese American Association of Greater Chicago, Chicago Association for China's Peaceful Association, Hip Sing Association organized various protest activities that are very influential. These activities are widely reported not only by local Chinese medias but also by medias in China such as CCTV, Zhejiang TV, Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, Sohu.com and Sina.com, etc. Consul General Zhao expressed his appreciation to the local Chinese community for their above acting. He said, the Chinese people cannot be insulted, nor can people throughout the world be humiliated. Justice will prevail and Abe's attempt to revive the militarism is doomed to failure.

Local Chinese community leaders said, the Chinese compatriots in Greater Chicago are outraged by Abe's failure to face Japan's history of aggression and his visit to the Yasukuni Shrine. Local Chinese compatriots spontaneously organized various activities including press conference, resolutely opposing Abe's action. They call on peace -loving people all over the world to be united and jointly stop the Japanese right-wing forces' attempt to revive the militarism.
