On July 16, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Trade Secretary Gary Locke in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

During the meeting, Premier Wen underscored bilateral effective consultation and coordination in addressing such major issues as the global financial crisis, climate change, counter-terrorism and anti-proliferation thanks to the frequent exchanges at all levels. "These efforts have boosted China-U.S. ties and are conducive to cementing international cooperation," Premier Wen said.

Premier Wen said the two countries should steadfastly safeguard common interests, keep closer communication and cooperation and properly handle differences so that bilateral ties will be more stable and dynamic. "As a crucial part of China-U.S. relations, our trade and energy cooperation is of great significance for both countries' economic growth and sustainable development," Premier Wen said. He hoped that both sides will make full use of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue and other important mechanisms. "In a spirit of openness, innovation and win-win outcome, both should respect each other and consult equally to bolster cooperation and benefit both nations as well as the international community," Premier Wen said.

Chu and Locke told Premier Wen that U.S.-China relations are currently the world's most important bilateral ties. The U.S. side is ready to further strengthen cooperation with China on economy, trade, energy and dealing with climate change so as to play an important role in promoting the world's sustainable development. They expected the upcoming China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue to yield positive results. They also pledged joint efforts with the Chinese side to push forward bilateral ties.

Chinese Minister of Commerce Chen Deming and Zhang Guobao, Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and Director General of National Energy Bureau, attended the meeting.
