China is gaining influence in the region, and a peacefully rising, prosperous China is beneficial, rather than detrimental, to all, says an article in People's Daily.

Many Western media outlets tend to interpret China's development as expanding its sphere of influence. They even play other regional powers against China for balance of power.

To fight off their incorrect views we should emphasize that China pursues a completely different diplomacy than the old, outdated colonialist powers, and it will never impose its ideas upon small neighbors. In addition, the competition between powers is benign rather than vicious, propelling the economic development of all.

It is upon such principles that China established good and mutual beneficial relationships with all its neighbors. China insists on sharing the fruits of development with its close neighbors and creating opportunities for the progress of all. Maintaining good relations with all is among its chief diplomatic goals.

Unlike the Western colonialists, China will never rely on military force to pillage any neighbor.

With the east and Southeast Asia gradually becoming engines of the global economy, China will inject more power into the region and welcome the cooperation of other powers.
