2018-07-08 23:00

On July 1st, July 4th and July 7th, 2018, Consul General Hong Lei attended summer picnics held by the Chicago Guangzhou Association, the 5th Anniversary Celebration of the Duanfang High School Chinese American Alumni Association, and the second Chicago Chinese Table Tennis Tournament hosted by the Association of Chinese Americans and the Wuyi Association of Chicago (hereinafter referred to as the "Two Associations"). Deputy Consul General Liu Jun, Deputy Consul General Yu Peng, Illinois State Representative Theresa Mah, leaders of the Chinese community in the Greater Chicago area and representatives from all walks of life attended these events.

During Chicago Guangzhou Association's "Food in Guangzhou" themed summer picnic, Consul General Hong Lei said that the Guangzhou Association hosts many influential events every year in Chicago. On each and every national day of China, the Association decorates the Chicago Chinatown with Chinese and American flags to showcase the deeply-entrenched China-US friendship. During the Spring Festival this year, the Association hung up red lanterns in Chinatown, sharing with everyone the joy of the Chinese New Year. This summer picnic will bring delicious food to the Chinese community. I hope that the Guangzhou Association will continue their efforts in providing more practical services for the Chinese community.

President Jiemei Lao said that the Chicago Guangzhou Association will continue to uphold its founding principle of promoting China-US friendship and promoting Chinese culture in the US.

During the celebration hosted by the Duanfang Alumni Association, Consul General Hong Lei stated that since the establishment of the Association, it has consolidated the friendship among the alumni, strengthened the sense of community service for fellow countrymen, and played a positive role in the local community. Association members from all walks of life are all contributors of China-US relations. I hope that the Association will carry on their original mission and make more contributions to enhancing friendship between China and the United States.

President Mei Zhaoli said that the Association will always stay close to the community and provide service for its alumni. In the future, the Association will continue to unite alumni, enhance friendship between China and the United States, and contribute to the development of the homeland.

During the Chinese Table Tennis Tournament in Chicago, Consul General Hong Lei said that table tennis plays a unique role in China-US relations. 46 years ago, Ping-Pong Diplomacy was launched and served as a prelude to the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and the United States. Last year, the Chinese table tennis world champion delegation came to Chicago to hold a number of performance matches. Many Chicago Chinese community friends attended those events, and their enthusiasm fully demonstrated table tennis’s wide popularity among the Chinese community. I hope that the "Two Associations" table tennis tournament will provide an important platform for table tennis enthusiasts to enjoy the competition and enhance friendship.

President Zhao Jianhang of the "Two Associations" said that they will make the table tennis tournament an annual event to attract more table tennis enthusiasts, and make more contribution to the vibrant development of athletic activities in the Chicago Chinese community.
